The Lakers did most of their damage in the first half of the game. Jones established the lead with his three goals while Evan Kirk was stoning the limited opportunities Brooklin got on him. Then, in the final minute of the first period Self made it 4-0 when he cleanly picked off a pass in the defensive zone and sprinted away from everyone to bury a sidearm shot past Mike Poulin.
It looked like Brooklin would have a last chance to get on the board in the dying seconds of the first, but when the Lakers got a turnover, called timeout and stretched the lead to 5-0 when Evans--who also added three assists in the game--fired an outside sub shot into the far corner with three seconds remaining.
The first intermission provided an interesting diversion for the fans. Canada's U19 women's field lacrosse team played an exhibition game during the break between periods. They leave for the world championships in Scotland on Sunday. Scott Evans, whose niece Erica Evans is on the U19 team, helped out by coming to tend one of the nets and made a couple of nice saves.
The Lakers just kept rolling in the second, running off five straight goals before Mike Triolo was finally able to beat Kirk with a classic overhand bouncer from outside the arc just three minutes from the end of the frame.
Tutton opened the third with a goal just over a minute in. After that, the Lakers' intensity waned and the Redmen controlled much of the play. It was far too big a hole to dig out of, though. Brooklin did manage to get four more goals include the first career MSL marker for unaffiliated callup John St. John.
Peterborough plays their third game in five days Thursday night at home against the Oakville Rock, whose only loss in their last six games was to the Lakers. Brooklin heads on the road Thursday to take on the Brampton Excelsiors in a game that has huge implications for their chances to fight back and earn a playoff spot.
