The KW Kodiaks outshot the Brampton Excelsiors, won most of the faceoffs and were more successful on the power play, but the Excelsiors led in the most important category, outscoring the Kodiaks 12-10 to move out of the Major Series Lacrosse basement and into a tie with KW for fourth place and the final playoff spot. Mike Hominuk and Dustin Caravello had hat tricks for Brampton. Chris Corbeil and Chris Attwood each added 2 goals and 2 assists.Brampton took a 3-0 lead but then Mike Teeter struck for a natural hat trick for KW, scoring 3 goals in 2:29. Teeter wound up with 4 goals and 2 assists in the game. Aaron Wilson had 3 goals and 5 assists and Mat McLeod had a goal and 4 assists in his debut with the Kodiaks after being acquired in the trade with Six Nations for Jesse Gamble.
The teams were tied 4-4 after the first period and KW pulled ahead 6-5 in the second, but Brampton went on a three-goal run in the middle of the period sparked by Hominuk's shorthanded marker. Brampton was ahead 11-8 when Chris Attwood took a major penalty for spearing at 14:20 of the third, giving the Kodiaks a chance to get back into the game. KW took advantage quickly, getting power play goals from Brandon Ivey and Wilson just 29 seconds apart to pull within on goal.
They couldn't find the tying goal, though, and Hominuk sealed the deal when he scored into the empty net with 7 seconds to play. Anthony Cosmo made 35 saves on 45 shots to earn the win in net.
Brampton's next game is this Sunday at 7 pm when they play host to the Peterborough Lakers. KW returns to the floor next Tuesday at home against the Brooklin Redmen in an 8 pm game.
