Lakers rebound from Tuesday loss to take 2-1 series lead with 10-6 win over Kodiaks

The Peterborough Lakers regained home floor advantage by taking Game 3 in their MSL semifinal series 10-6 over the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks in Waterloo Wednesday night. The Lakers scored a pair of shorthanded goals to help take a 6-2 lead midway through the second period. KW fought back with three straight to end the frame, pulling them within a single goal and they tied it up just over a minute into the third when Jordan Critch connected. But the Lakers answered immediately, getting a goal from Adam Jones just 49 seconds later to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Shawn Evans, Mark Steenhuis and Nick Weiss each scored twice for the Lakers, who take a 2-1 lead in the series. Corey Fowler and Ryan Benesch each had a pair for KW. Game 4 is back at the Waterloo Recreational Complex Friday at 8 pm.

Not so fast, Lakers: Kodiaks turn tables on Peterborough with 13-7 win

The Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks got hammered in game one of their semifinal series with the Peterborough Lakers, falling 14-4. They weren't about to let it happen again, so they came out fast and just kept rolling en route to a 13-7 win in game two Tuesday night. Junior callup Chris Cloutier led the way with 3 goals and 3 assists as the Kodiaks outscored the Lakers in each period. Ryan Benesch had a hat trick and a pair of assists. Joey Cupido, Jamie Rooney and Corey Fowler each added 2 goals for KW, with Rooney and Fowler also garnering 2 assists each. 

Mark Steenhuis and Shawn Evans had 2 goals and 2 assists and John Grant Jr. 2 goals and an assist for Peterborough. Dillon Ward was outstanding in the KW net. The Lakers outshot the Kodiaks 54-37 but could only beat him seven times. 

The teams are right back at it Wednesday night; game three is at the Waterloo Recreation Complex Wednesday night at 8pm.

Chiefs down Redmen 9-4, take 2-0 series lead

Jeff Shattler was on fire Tuesday night, and it spelled a big win and a 2-0 lead in their semifinal series with the Brooklin Redmen for the Six Nations Chiefs. Shattler scored 6 goals and added 2 assists as the Chiefs beat Brooklin 9-4 to take control of the series. Colin Doyle chipped in with 5 assists for the Chiefs and Brandon Miller turned aside 34 of the 38 shots he faced to earn the win.

Chiefs draw first blood with 9-8 win over Redmen

The Six Nations Pro-Fit Chiefs struck early and were able to hold off the late surge to earn first blood.
Stephen Keogh's goal with just over five minutes to go in regulation gave the Chiefs a 9-8 win over the Brooklin Redmen on the road Sunday night.
With the win, the Chiefs own a 1-0 lead in their best-of-seven Major Series Lacrosse semifinal series.
Cody Jamieson and Colin Doyle scored less than two minutes apart late in the first period to give the Chiefs a two-goal lead after 20 minutes.
After Shayne Jackson cut the lead five minutes into the second period, Jamieson regained the two-goal mark, with Dan Coates, Jamieson and Kasey Beirnes adding to the lead.
Mike Triolo and Curtis Knight responded for the Redmen.
After Jeff Shattler made it a 7-3 Chiefs lead, Steve Priolo, Kyle Aquin and Shayne Jackson got the Redmen back into the game. But then Doyle and Keogh  gave the Chiefs the lead they would'nt give up despite late goals by Aquin and Gavin Prout.
Brandon Miller made 43 stops to earn the win, while Mike Poulin made 50 save in teh losing effort.
Game 2 of the series is Tuesday, when the two teams lock horns at the Iroquois LAcrosse Arena at 8 p.m.

LAX NOTES: Jamieson led the Chiefs with three goals and three assists, while Beirnes nad Keogh each had two helpers to go along with their goals. The Chiefs almost had its full roster. Roger Vyse, Craig Point and Randy Staats were notable scratches.

Lakers dump Kodiaks 14-4 to open playoffs

The Peterborough Lakers came to work and showed just how good they can be in a 14-4 win over the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks in the first game of the teams' MSL semifinal series. The first period was close as Dillon Ward made 17 saves in the KW net to keep his team within one at 3-2, but the floodgates opened in the second. The Lakers poured in eight goals on Ward and his replacement Steve Fryer in the middle frame to take an 11-3 lead into the final 20 minutes. Ward returned for the third and was very good again, but the deficit was far too much for the Kodiaks to get back into the game.

Mark Steenhuis, as he has done much of the year, led the Lakers attack with 3 goals and 3 assists. Aaron Wilson and Chad Culp each chipped in 2 goals and 2 assists and Brad Self had 2 goals and a helper. Corey Fowler was the only Kodiak with more than one point; he scored twice and added an assist.

Excelsiors beat Lakers 11-8 in final game of regular season

The Brampton Excelsiors may be out of the Major Series Lacrosse playoffs, but they finished their season strong by downing the Peterborough Lakers 11-8 at Memorial Arena in Brampton Thursday night. The Excelsiors scored seven straight goals to open the second period and three straight off the top of the third, enough to give them the win over a Peterborough team that had already clinched second place. Brady Heseltine led all scorers with 2 goals and 2 assists for Brampton. Shane Scott also had a pair of goals. For Peterborough, Matt Crough and Andrew Suitor scored twice each.

The Lakers led 2-1 after the first period but found themselves trailing 8-2 after Brampton's run. Peterborough got four goals back before the end of the period, including three in 26 seconds from 18:19 to 18:45. The Excels turned the momentum back in their favour, though, with the three-goal run that gave them an 11-6 lead and held on from there.

Peterborough finishes the season at 10-8, tied with Kitchener-Waterloo for second, but gets the higher seeding and home floor advantage in the first round based on a better goals for and against ratio in the two games the Lakers and Kodiaks split during the season. Brampton finishes 5-13 and alone in sixth place.
