The Peterborough Lakers enjoyed a pair
of 5-goal runs as they dominated the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks en
route to a 15-7 win in Major Series Lacrosse action Sunday night at
the Waterloo Recreation Complex. Cory Vitarelli had a hat
trick and five other players scored twice each for the Lakers, while
Mark Steenhuis led all scorers with a goal and 5 assists for 6
points.
Jay Thorimbert opened the
scoring for the Kodiaks six minutes into the game, then the Lakers
ran off five straight goals before the period ended. KW battled back
into the game, drawing within 6-4. Then the Lakers got rolling again
and ran off five more goals in a five-minute span to take thorough
control. The outcome was never really in doubt after that.
KW Head Coach Steve Dietrich
said his team can't afford to let the Lakers work harder than them,
which is what happened in the game. “We just didn't match their
intensity tonight and when you're playing against a team that has
more talent than you and you let them outwork you, it's going to be a
tough night,” Dietrich said.
Lakers goalie Tyler Carlson said
the defenders in front of him did a good job of not letting the
Olympic-sized concrete floor be a factor working against them. “All
in all we played solid defence and the big floor wasn't an issue for
us tonight,” Carlson said. In fact, they made it work in their
favour by looking for long outlet passes to spring transition players
for breaks. “That's my game. I like throwing those long bombs, so
any time I can use it in a big arena I'm going to give it a try.”
Junior callup Holden Cattoni,
Shawn Evans, Scott Evans and Aaron Wilson—returning
to play in KW for the first time since being traded from the Kodiaks
to the Lakers—each had 2 goals and 2 assists for Peterborough. The
win moves the Lakers back to .500 with six wins and six losses,
pending their appeal tonight of three forfeited games from the
beginning of the season.
KW falls to 5-5 and remains six points
ahead of both Oakville and Brampton, each of which were awarded one
win when Peterborough forfeited the games. The Kodiaks return to
action Wednesday night in Brooklin before a key home and home series
against Oakville. “Keep your heads up,” Dietrich says he told his
troops after the game. “This is a big week for us. We're fighting
for the fourth playoff spot. Brooklin is a big test for us Wednesday
but then next Sunday and Monday are huge for us.”
The Lakers' next action is this
Thursday when they play host to Oakville.
