The Brooklin Redmen are getting set for
their 50th anniversary season in Major Series Lacrosse and
will be hitting the floor at Iroquois Park for training camp in a
week. The dates are May 24, 26 and 30.
Just two days later, they will open
their home schedule against the Brampton Excelsiors, with whom they
battled for the final playoff berth last year.
Mitch Wilde will be in the lineup for
Broolin this summer, although he'll be hoping he isn't available
until after the Champions Cup as his Buffalo Bandits are still
chasing an NLL championship right now.
The transition player was acquired by
Brooklin on Tuesday from the Cobourg Kodiaks. In return, the Kodiaks
receive a pair of transition players in Mike Triolo and Dustin Dunn
as well as a second-round pick in the 2017 MSL draft and a
third-rounder in 2018.
Wilde is returning home. The Brooklin
native played two years of Jr B with the Clarington Green Gaels and
finished his junior career with two years with the Whitby Warriors,
including winning a Minto Cup in 2011.
“The group that we have now brings
chemistry to the table and they've won together,” says Redmen GM
Wayne Colley.
Cobourg GM John Webb is pleased to have
added a couple of pieces to the Kodiaks puzzle and to have more draft
picks to continue to plan for the future. “With both Dustin and
Mike it brings two young players who are hungry, want to make it to
the next level and the increased playing time will help them do
that,” Webb says.
Webb pointed out that Triolo almost
made the Bandits after they drafted him last year and that the 6'8”
player, who had a strong rookie season with the Durham Turfdogs of
CLax, can play at either end of the floor.
The Kodiaks have even less time to get
ready for the season to start. They have their first home opener in
Cobourg in just 11 days, Sunday May 29 at 6 pm against the Oakville
Rock. Cobourg has held a pair of tryout sessions and has its first
team practice next week.
